As part of my dissertation (and final) project whilst at university I have been making modification to a relational database management system called Rel, originally written by Dave Voorhis, and extended by many people. Rel was created as a way of teaching and researching relational database theory, I have made several enhancements to the system. Rev is a visual query system for Rel which allows the user to build and modify databases using visual query elements.

(I had no involvement in this version, this is how it was when I started development).

Installation instructions:

You’ll need JDK or JRE to run
Windows:
Just double click Rev.jar and everything should work by itself
Linux:
Type “java -jar Rev.jar” into the console terminal (without quotes)

The tuples editor. Tuple is another name for row or record, basically each tuple represents a unique set of values in a database table, Rev supports grouped relations with multiple sub tuples.

Graphing Software Windows 8

I am currently working on another version of my graphing app I have written. The previous version was written using HTML5 and JavaScript, this new version will be created using C# and XAML as a new Windows 8 app. The interface will be very similar and the display will show virtually the same.

Update on Writing Ghost 2.1

Writing Ghost 2.1 has been put on and off hold for the last year or more, unfortunately due to other projects I will be unlikely to release it anytime in the next few weeks. However Writing Ghost for Windows 8 has the fundamentals (i.e. offline stuff) built so it is possible with a little styling and online features building that this might end up being released before the main 2.1 (however I say this light heartedly, as I actually doubt that will happen).

Anyway, 2.1 will be released at some point, when I complete a few more projects, and it will hopefully be done soon (but I won’t say when this time).

Some new projects to expect in the next three months

Hello, it is that time of year again when students return to their natural habitat (and I don’t mean the library).
I am James Record a final year Computer Games Programming student at the University of Derby and this is what I will be working on in the next three months.

By December 2012 there will be some new projects for this website.

Writing Ghost for Windows 8
I am writing a new version of Writing Ghost for the brand new Windows 8 app store, although I cannot promise it will make the store itself, I will be working on a version which will be compatible with Windows RT and would be suitable for users to use the program on new devices.
Writing Ghost Win8 will be based on the latest Writing Ghost 2.1 file system (which I haven’t forgotten about). Hopefully I will be able to release v2.1 along with the Win8 version (although again I mention, I do not know whether it will make the public app store).
There will be more on this to come, along with possible screenshots and development stages.
Depending on popularity and how many people use windows 8 will depend on whether further work is continued on the project after December.

Zombie Game
I am also working on a computer game based around the idea of time and zombies. I cannot go into specifics (partly because they will change and also because this is a work in progress and there are ears listening). But basically it involves travelling back-and-forth between two times in the near future to solve puzzles and defeat a zombie outbreak.
To stay away from clichés there will be minimal conventional weaponry, most of the game play is puzzle based and exploring the map, shooting zombies is only necessary to survive and stay alive long enough to see the next puzzle.
I will not be working on this project alone: There will be 3 programmers and 8 artists (spread between environments, character modelling, rigging and animations and prop and 2D art). There are currently 11 of us in total making this so far the largest video game development team I have worked in.
Also there will be screenshots, videos and the demo will be available on completion in December for people to play. This will be a demo and no further work is expected beyond December.
More blog post will be made later in development.

The software renderer I have been working on for the past twelve or more weeks is finally at a reasonably presentable state, here is a video demo demonstrating some of its main features (though texturing is not included in this demo).

I said the final version would be available for free download by Christmas but as there are still a few bugs with it I will want to fix these before I release it. I will still do this but it may be a few more weeks yet, and I may also add more functionality than intended for the original version anyway.

Previously you may have seen my software renderer with a flat wireframe model that didn’t look that amazing, but now i have the beginnings of lighting, here is a screenshot of what i have done since then. I will continue to update this blog with updates and then include one big blog when the project is complete and looks perfect. (probably just before Christmas).
